Who Was Hannah?

Hannah lived during the time of the Judges, a period of spiritual and political instability in Israel’s history. She was married to Elkanah, who had another wife, Peninnah. While Peninnah bore children, Hannah was unable to conceive, which brought her deep sorrow.

Hannah’s Struggle

Hannah’s infertility caused her immense emotional pain, compounded by Peninnah’s taunts and ridicule (1 Samuel 1:6-7). Despite her suffering, Hannah faithfully attended the yearly pilgrimage to Shiloh with her family to worship God. Her persistence in the face of pain demonstrates a remarkable depth of faith.

Hannah’s Prayer and Vow

Her Visit to Shiloh

One year, overwhelmed with grief, Hannah went to the tabernacle at Shiloh and poured out her heart to God. She prayed silently, her lips moving but no sound coming out, a posture that caught the attention of Eli, the priest (1 Samuel 1:9-13).

Her Vow

In her prayer, Hannah made a solemn vow: “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life” (1 Samuel 1:11). Her willingness to dedicate her child to God reflects her deep faith and trust in His provision.

Faith Amid Misunderstanding

Eli initially misunderstood Hannah’s prayer, thinking she was drunk. When she explained her anguish and fervent prayer, Eli blessed her, saying, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him” (1 Samuel 1:17). This interaction highlights Hannah’s humility and unwavering faith despite being misunderstood.

God’s Answer and Hannah’s Obedience

Samuel’s Birth

God heard Hannah’s prayer and blessed her with a son, whom she named Samuel, meaning “heard by God” (1 Samuel 1:20). The joy of holding her long-awaited child was a testament to God’s faithfulness.

Dedication of Samuel

True to her vow, Hannah brought Samuel to the tabernacle after he was weaned and dedicated him to the Lord’s service (1 Samuel 1:24-28). This act of obedience was not only a fulfillment of her promise but also a profound act of faith, trusting God with the future of her son.

Hannah’s Song of Praise

After dedicating Samuel, Hannah offered a heartfelt prayer of praise, recorded in 1 Samuel 2:1-10. Her song exalts God’s sovereignty, justice, and provision. She praises Him as the one who lifts the humble and brings low the proud, a reflection of her own experience.

Comparison with Other Biblical Songs

Hannah’s song echoes themes found in Mary’s Magnificat (Luke 1:46-55), showing a shared spirit of gratitude and recognition of God’s power. Both women acknowledged God’s work in their lives and celebrated His ability to transform circumstances.
