Jesus Christ’s authority and divinity are foundational truths of the Christian faith. His teachings, miracles, and power to forgive sins reveal His divine nature and eternal mission. Throughout the New Testament, Jesus’s words and actions testify that He is the Son of God, sent to redeem humanity and offer salvation to all who believe in Him.
Authority in Teachings, Miracles, and Forgiveness
The authority of Jesus Christ is unmistakable in His teachings. When Jesus taught, He spoke not as a mere teacher but as one with divine authority. In Matthew 7:29, it is recorded, “For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” His words carried the power to transform lives, offering hope, guidance, and a call to righteousness. His parables and sermons, such as the Sermon on the Mount, continue to inspire believers to live according to God’s will.
Jesus’s authority extended beyond words; it was evident in His miracles. He healed the sick, restored sight to the blind, calmed the storm, and raised the dead. Each miracle demonstrated His mastery over physical and spiritual realms.
These acts of divine power were not performed merely to astonish but to reveal His compassion and His mission to restore and redeem. In Matthew 8:26, when Jesus calmed the storm, His disciples marveled, asking, “What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”
Perhaps most significantly, Jesus displayed His authority through His power to forgive sins. In Matthew 9:6, He declared, “But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins,” and then healed a paralyzed man as proof of His divine authority. This act, among many others, affirmed His role as the Savior who reconciles humanity with God.
Divine Affirmation: Baptism and Transfiguration

Jesus’s divine nature was affirmed by God the Father during key moments in His life. At His baptism, as recorded in Matthew 3:16-17, the heavens opened, and the Spirit of God descended like a dove, while a voice from heaven proclaimed, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” This powerful declaration confirmed Jesus’s identity and divine mission.
Another profound event was the transfiguration, described in Matthew 17:1-8. Jesus took Peter, James, and John to a high mountain, where His appearance was transformed. His face shone like the sun, and His clothing became white as light.
Moses and Elijah appeared, speaking with Him, symbolizing the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. The voice of God once again affirmed, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.” This moment revealed Jesus’s glory and divine nature, strengthening the disciples’ faith and foreshadowing His resurrection.
