Who Was the Apostle John?
John was the son of Zebedee and the younger brother of James, another of Jesusโ disciples. He was a fisherman by trade, working alongside his brother and their father when Jesus called them to follow Him (Matthew 4:21-22).
John was part of Jesusโ inner circle, along with Peter and James. These three disciples were privileged to witness some of the most intimate and powerful moments of Jesusโ ministry, such as:
- The Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9)
- The raising of Jairusโ daughter (Mark 5:35-43)
- Jesusโ agony in Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-42)
Johnโs close relationship with Jesus earned him the title โthe disciple whom Jesus lovedโ (John 13:23). This phrase, which appears multiple times in his Gospel, speaks to the deep personal connection he had with Christ.
Johnโs Transformation: From โSon of Thunderโ to Apostle of Love
Interestingly, John wasnโt always known for his gentleness. Jesus gave John and his brother James the nickname โSons of Thunderโ (Mark 3:17), likely because of their fiery temperament.
One incident in Luke 9:51-56 illustrates their intensity. When a Samaritan village rejected Jesus, John and James asked, โLord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?โ (Luke 9:54, NKJV). Jesus rebuked them, teaching them a lesson in grace and patience.
Over time, Johnโs heart was transformed by love. He became the apostle who wrote extensively about Godโs love and the importance of loving one another. His first epistle, 1 John, is filled with references to love, including:
- โGod is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.โ (1 John 4:16, ESV)
- โWe love because He first loved us.โ (1 John 4:19, ESV)
Johnโs journey reminds us that Godโs love has the power to change us. No matter how strong-willed, prideful, or impatient we may be, God can soften our hearts and transform us into vessels of His grace and compassion.
John at the Cross: A Model of Devotion
One of the most poignant moments in Johnโs life occurred at the foot of the cross. While most of the disciples fled in fear, John stayed with Jesus, standing alongside Mary, the mother of Jesus.
From the cross, Jesus entrusted His mother into Johnโs care, saying:
โWoman, behold your son.โ Then He said to the disciple, โBehold your mother!โ And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own home.โ (John 19:26-27, NKJV)
This act reveals Johnโs unwavering loyalty. Even in the most painful and terrifying moment, he remained faithful. His actions challenge us to ask:
- Do I stay close to Jesus even in difficult times?
- Am I willing to care for those God entrusts to me, just as John cared for Mary?
Johnโs faithfulness encourages us to stand firm in our relationship with Christ, even when life becomes difficult.
Johnโs Role in the Early Church and the Book of Revelation

After Jesusโ resurrection, John became a pillar of the early church. He preached, taught, and mentored younger believers, including Polycarp, one of the early church fathers.
Later in life, John was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation. Despite suffering persecution, John remained faithful, offering hope and encouragement to believers facing trials.
His vision of the new heaven and new earth in Revelation 21-22 is one of the most beautiful promises in Scripture, reminding us that eternal life with God awaits those who remain faithful.
A Personal Story: Learning Love Through Johnโs Example
A few years ago, I struggled with holding onto grudges. I found it difficult to forgive people who had hurt me, and my heart felt heavy with resentment.
One night, I came across 1 John 4:7-8:
โBeloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.โ
I was struck by the realization that true love comes from God, and if I refused to love, I was distancing myself from Him. I began praying for God to soften my heart, just as He transformed John from a โSon of Thunderโ into an apostle of love.
Over time, I felt God working within me. I started practicing forgiveness, reaching out to mend broken relationships, and allowing Godโs love to replace my bitterness with peace.
Johnโs story reminds us that love isnโt just a feelingโitโs an action, a choice, and a reflection of Godโs character.
Reflective Questions: Applying Johnโs Lessons to Our Lives
- John was known as โthe disciple whom Jesus loved.โ Do I live in a way that reflects my identity as someone deeply loved by God?
- How has God transformed my heart over time? What areas of my life still need His refining love?
- Like John at the cross, am I willing to stand by Jesus in difficult times, even when others turn away?
- Am I actively choosing love and forgiveness in my daily interactions, as John teaches in 1 John 4:7-8?
- John remained faithful even in exile. How can I remain faithful to Christ when I face challenges or setbacks?
